What is Psychotherapy ?
Psychotherapy is a specialty area within the larger field of Clinical Psychology. It is both ‘science’ and ‘art’. The science involves the mastery of a body of psychological knowledge. The art has to do with the always unique interaction between a therapist and a client.
Just as the field of Psychology has many branches (Clinical, Research, School, Organizational), so does Psychotherapy have many types (Cognitive-Behavioral, Psychodynamic, Family Systems, etc.). While there are many possible approaches, the most important ingredient to a successful outcome is the presence of a ‘positive alliance’ (or ‘good fit’) with your therapist. (see Research on ‘common factors of psychotherapy’)
Psychotherapy is a uniquely special opportunity to explore one’s life in the presence of another ~ a kind of ‘duet’ for one. Even after 20 years of doing this work, I continue to feel privileged & energized by the ‘authentic engagement’ every new therapeutic alliance offers.
